Delight Bakery is a mobile application concept designed to help health-conscious consumers discover and order healthier pastry options while making informed nutritional decisions.

Problem Statement

Consumers often struggle to balance their desire for pastries with their health goals. Existing solutions focus primarily on visual appeal rather than nutritional transparency and health benefits.

DETAILED CASE STUDY OF PRODUCT DESIGN OF THE DELIGHT BAKERY MOBILE APP

Overview

The Design of a pastry mobile app that allows users who are health conscious to place orders for healthy pastries that improve their physical well-being. Utilizing the design lifecycle to achieve user-needs design and business goals

Quantitative research

In an online survey conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2022, after pandemic restrictions were relaxed, of some 8,000 consumers in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, it was discovered that at least 70% of the survey respondents across all age groups and markets want to be healthier.Food is essential to achieving that goal, and about 50% of consumers, across age groups, say healthy eating is their top priority. Other findings showed that younger consumers in the 18-24 cohort are more likely to have a longer list of ingredients they seek to avoid, and in particular, prioritize reducing their consumption of red meat, dairy, and gluten.Despite the desire to do better in eating healthy across all age groups, almost 50% of consumers admit to having difficulty understanding what they need to do when it comes to choices on health and sustainability and providing simple and easy-to-understand information about product impact on health and sustainability could make a world of difference for consumers who are eager to learn. Younger consumers would especially benefit from information on how to walk the talk. These consumers are the biggest advocates of eating healthily and sustainably, but they are also the biggest cohort to admit not understanding how best to do so.

Qualitative research

I developed some questions and conducted one-on-one interviews with several people of which the majority were millennials, to identify users' pain points regarding health and pastries. Some of the questions are found below1. On a scale of 1-10 how important is health to you?2. How often do you order pastries and what is your motivation?3. When you place a pastry order how do you know the health benefits?4. What are the challenges when placing an order and how does it make you feel?5. How do you think the challenge can be resolved?I discovered from the answers that people take health quite seriously however when they have certain cravings for pastries they most times overlook the health implications and go ahead to purchase and eat the pastries. Although they tend to feel a bit guilty afterwards and put in more time for workouts. However, the majority of people interviewed stated that they would really love a situation where they could eat pastries without wondering about its impact on their health or how many calories they might have added. Also, they agreed that If only they had easy access to pastries that improve health and taste good it would be a great relief.

Goal Statement

The Delight Bakery Mobile App will let users order healthy tasty pastries online which will affect people who are health conscious for one reason or the other by specifying the health benefits of each pastry. we will measure effectiveness by tracking the number of health centric pastries ordered with the app.

Competitive Analysis

Many apps provide pastries for consumers, which cuts across all demographics, however many of the competitors are not focused on the health benefits of the pastries but will rather entice customers with visually appealing pastries, although a good strategy to get customers quickly, it doesn't serve well those who are conscious of their eating and health. Essentially, an alternative needs to be developed in the market to address the user needs of the health-conscious demographic who enjoy eating pastries.

Design ideas

How might we create an easy and accessible app that provides pastries focused on improving the health of customers?
Created several wireframes for the homepage and chose the first drawing that shows all products touching on the pain points of ease of access and availability of products

Lo-fi designs

Created a homepage that shows clearly the names of products on cards so users are not in the loop of what the product offerings are, every product has health benefit details which can be accessed only by clicking on a specific product of interest addressing the pain point of lack of health information of pastry products.

Lo-fi designs

The user flow is designed to be simple and easy from the signup page to the homepage where you can find products independently, in categories or by search. users learn more about the product by clicking on it and can place more than one count order, leading to a confirmation page before the final checkout of ordered pastries.

After user testing made a few iterations to the designs and finalized the mockups

Style Guide

Used colours that aligned with the company logo to highlight brand identity, also used different variations of typography with strokes and applied shadow effects to some of the designs in the app to increase reading visibility and accessibility considerations.

Takeaways

It was quite interesting conducting the user research for the Delight bakery mobile app and i gained insights that benefitted me personally. I also received a lot of commendable feedback from the user testing and I learned how user research can offer so much relevant information about users and cause you to create designs of high-impact and value to many lives.
